Our school is in a rural community in western Michigan. We are the county seat and have a very transitive population facing impoverished and challenging home situations. Our school partners with local agencies to improve healthy habits. I am the elementary resource room teacher, and right now, I have 1 kindergartener, 4 second graders, 2 third graders, 5 forth graders and two 5th graders. Our needs range from behavior problems and academic delays to sensory and autism related challenges to learning.
It is my goal as their teacher to make school an enjoyable experience where all students feel safe and engaged, and to foster their dreams and goals as well as their curiosity and love of learning.
My Project
My special needs students have difficulties with staying focused.
They are noticeably more engaged in their work and less likely to be disruptive to their peers when they are given a the opportunity to wiggle while they work.
I currently have one yoga ball that rolls around the room. One student uses it most of the time, but several others would benefit from having the ability to bounce and move when they get antsy or anxious.
Having the option of sitting on a flexible ball or being able to use the wiggle tools for brain breaks to help them refocus will make a huge difference in their educational experience in our room.
The option of using the balance boards and fidgets during a wiggle break will help get their brains engaged.
