Help me give my students Flexible Seating at small group and writing tables. This will give them the wiggle they need to stay focused for longer periods!
I teach 22-4-year-olds with varying personalities. Not only are they 4, but I have several Special Education students mixed in with my general education students, which is called inclusion. My goal this year is to get them as ready as I can for Kindergarten. I not only want to develop their academic skills but their social-emotional skills as well. As a Title I school, we have many students that are economically disadvantaged and I want for them to come each day to my classroom and feel like they are in their second home with their extended family. Each day we start with hugs and high-fives and end with hugs and high-fives. They are loved, they are strong, and they are brilliant!
My Project
Many of my students are learning how to be in a structured setting for the first time in their lives! At the young age of 4, some who turned 4 literally weeks before the school year, struggle to stay focused. As a full-day Pre-K program, I am happy to show them what a full day of school will look like. At 4-years-old I really don't require them to sit through long presentations, but they are required to sit through a small-group session, typically no more than 20 minutes. However, this is a long period for a kid who has never had to do such a thing! The Flexible Seating (wobble chairs and balance balls) I am wishing for will allow them to have a natural wiggle, giving them the sense of fidgeting, but keeping them engaged with their teacher at the same time!
