This year I will be working with eager to learn, 5-10-year-olds in a remediation/intervention setting and EL setting. Our school is a Title I school located in an area where more than three-quarters of our students come from low-income households and often have difficulty including educational materials into their daily routines. Despite the hardships that many students face, these children enter my classroom every day with smiles on their faces and pockets full of questions.
My students are curious, full of wonder, enthusiastic, creative, and are always ready to explore the world around them.
They find joy in the smallest things, such as reading a new book, opening a new box of crayons and using markers to write on the board. They "light up" each time they learn a new letter, write a new word or identify snap words in their books. They see school as a great adventure where they can share, investigate, experiment, and learn.
My Project
My students come to class ready to increase their reading and writing skills. Prior to entering my classroom, they have been sitting on hard, stiff chairs in their homeroom class. This traditional seating arrangement that follows them as they move from classroom to classroom often interferes with their ability to access and store new information.
Children learn best when they are actually moving and learning at the same time.
As my students struggle to adhere to the seating arrangement of traditional chairs and desk, they often lose focus during the lesson. Flexible seating options, such as wiggle stools, allow them the movement they need in order to participate fully in the lesson. These chairs allow them to ignore the rules of sitting up straight in a hard chair and allow them to engage and focus on the instruction.
By adding moveable, wiggly stools, my students will be able to increase their on-task behavior, concentrate on instruction and improve their academic performance!
