My students need opportunities to wiggle on Wobble Chairs and bounce their feet with Bouncy Bands while they engage in learning and maintain focus without disrupting their peers.
Last year, I taught first grade to a behaviorally and developmentally diverse group of six and seven year olds. I enjoyed teaching my students and learning from them each day. As the end of grade one approached, I was presented with the opportunity to teach second grade. I would be able to advance to second grade with the same group of students from first grade. The beauty of "looping" with your students from one grade to the next is that I already know what makes them tick. My students and I have built solid relationships with each other that will follow us into second grade.
My students derive from a variety of backgrounds.
Poverty and the foster care system is familiar to some. Other students have parents who work multiple jobs to make ends meet each month. While other students live in a two parent household who provide a middle class income. Each of my students are unique. However, what each student does have in common is a desire to learn, grow, and to feel a sense of belonging.
My Project
I intend to incorporate Wobble Chairs into my classroom. These chairs are structurally sound stools that allow children to wiggle in all directions as they are engaged in classroom instruction. All students will benefit from this style of flexible seating as they wiggle, wobble, and continue to focus and stay engaged as a learner. I also envision the use of Bouncy Bands for students' chairs. These stretchy bands are placed on the front of students' chairs. Students can relieve their stress, anxiety, or extra energy while quietly bouncing their feet on the Bouncy Band. Students with ADD/ADHD, developmental delays, anxiety, stress, or just extra energy will be able to bounce their feel while continuing to engage in classroom instruction.
Every kid is one caring adult away from being a success story.
(As quoted by informED). I would love to be the caring adult who provides my students with opportunities to maintain their focus in the classroom. Children notice and appreciate when their needs are considered. Providing comfortable spaces in the classroom that allow for students to relax, yet stay involved in learning is critical for today's learners. It is because of generous donors that my students and I will be able to continue to build our solid rapport and further develop their educational skills. My students will take notice when they are provided with Wobble Chairs and Bouncy Bands that support them as unique learners.
