Our school is Title I and offers free breakfast and lunch for all students. There is a large number of students in our school who rely on the backpack program for food. Our community is in a rural part of the county, which limits our families' access to resources and results in a high mobility rate.
For many of my students kindergarten is first exposure to a formal school setting.
Less than 50% of them will have attended Pre-Kindergarten or daycare. Either way they come to school ready to learn and I want to be able to meet all of their needs by providing a learning environment that is warm and welcoming.
My Project
I began implementing flexible seating options last year. My students were more focused when given the option of where to work. While we still had our conventional seating I encouraged my students to choose a work place that worked for them. Many days you could come into our room and find students tucked into a corner with a lap desk, laying on the floor with a clipboard, sitting on the wiggle seat or even standing at a table. What a joy it was to see so many students engaged in their learning!
Flexible seating allows students to have more control over their learning environment and what works best for them.
Unfortunately, I do not have enough non-conventional seating to meet the needs of my most energetic students. The addition of wobble seats, soft seats and stability balls will give us more options to choose from. No one will be left out! When my new students arrive in the fall they will be full of energy. Many times this energy interferes with their learning. I would like to turn their energy into a positive. What better way than to provide them with the opportunity to wiggle and squirm while they grow their brains!
