Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach students from kinder to 6th grade who are identified with special needs, academic gaps in math and ELA, and who are second language learners. My students speak Spanish as their home language and are learning English as a second language.
My students are creative, thoughtful and full of questions!
They come to school each day ready to try new things and take brave chances in order to grow both personally and academically.
I incorporate a variety of learning strategies, group work, and alternative seating and learning options to ensure that each student's needs are met, right where they are!
My Project
Students in special education are distracted, squirmy, wiggly, and full of energy! My students need new and functional chairs, such as the stools that I'm requesting, to enhance our classroom environment. Flexible seating provides many benefits to students. Students who struggle with attention and focusing are given more sensory input than with traditional seating options. Student engagement also increases when given more choices for seating and movement.
The purpose of "Wiggle and Learn" is to provide students to sit on the floor, desk, or table while giving them the option of movement while they are learning.
These innovative chairs allow knees, hips and backs to find comfortable and ever changing positions so that sitting while learning is no longer a sedentary activity. It is ideal for children with ADD (inattentive, impulse, or hyperactivity), as it provides an outlet for restlessness and extra energy while not distracting others. It will also benefit children with autism and emotional disorders by giving them a controllable way to engage both mind and body.
