Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a Title I school where over 90 percent of the students receive free breakfast and lunch. My fourth-grade students are an energetic bunch from a variety of cultures and backgrounds. They come to school every day full of excitement, curiosity, and very eager to learn. School is not only a place to learn but also a place where they feel safe as part of our classroom community. It is a place where they are encouraged to set high goals for themselves and work hard, so they can fulfill their dreams.
My Project
Imagine being an energetic nine or ten-year-old and having to sit still in a hard chair most of the day while at the same time attempting to stay engaged. Sounds productive? Not at all! An uncomfortable student is an unproductive student.
Studies have consistently shown that classroom designs matter to how children engage and participate in their learning experience.
This is why after researching the benefits of flexible sitting and consulting with colleagues that are using it in their classrooms, I have decided to implement flexible seating in my classroom. I found that the benefits of giving students wiggle room and choice through flexible seating include: better attention, more productivity, improved behavior, and increased collaboration and engagement.
In order to help my students achieve their best ability, I would like them to have a classroom that will inspire learning, reflect their diversity, and allow for movement and choice. Besides the stability balls and floor cushion we already have, adding Wobble chairs, bean bags, and mobile stand up desk will give the students a variety of seating options to pick from, so they can choose the seat that works best for them.
