Student ownership and leadership is a driving force in our daily operations.
Students are well aware that their voice is valued and are willing to work to make things happen. Their requests within the last year have considered and prioritized with a plan to accomplish their goals.
Our elementary school is located in a small rural county. We are a Title I school with many of our students never having traveled beyond our county lines, and even fewer across state lines. Their exposure to the larger world is very limited. Our school has a strong sense of community that can really only be felt and not described, despite our rural, low income status. Students are eager to learn and constantly inspire teachers to take them higher, farther and faster than the day before. My vision for these students is to expose them to the world through the school library. Technology, information, tools & spaces to stretch their mind is key to making this happen!
My Project
With the global pandemic and school requirements, our students need outdoor learning space like never before. This is needed for social emotional wellness to get them beyond the four walls of the classroom as well as for the safety measures with benefits of fresh air.
We will use these outdoor desks in a shady, outdoor space at our school that is perfect for outdoor learning.
These outdoor desks will help students stay focused as we work on lessons across the curriculum while in nature. The small, portable desks are designed for flexible seating and are ideal for learning outside. We will be able to space the desks to be a full 6 feet apart and move them around as needed. This is also helpful to hold lessons in various areas around campus as classrooms share spaces. The biggest positive to using the desks outdoors is that parents and students will feel assured that students are safe at school as they get fresh air during class.
