Help me give my students Hand2Mind reading rods, Superhero Phonics, Spelligator, and removable highlighter tape for learning sight words, phonics, vocabulary, comprehension skills and more!
The K-5 elementary school students, whom I teach as a reading intervention teacher, are working hard to learn how to read! Our classroom, The Reading Lab, is an intervention setting where small groups of K-5 students work hard to build their reading skills. My students come from a range of diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. The skills and knowledge they enter the school year with are as diverse as they are. Different groups of students walk through my door every half hour expecting and deserving to be taught with enthusiasm and creativity--it is my privilege to be that person who is excited to see them each day and to hold them to the highest expectations.
My students need fun and engaging activities to improve their reading skills!
As a reading intervention teacher, I am responsible for helping kids that are reading below level to improve their skills. I need more tools to allow me to keep my lessons fun and engaging for kids of all ages.
My Project
With a new school year beginning, many students are expected to rapidly transition from months full of activity and movement to a classroom that relies—primarily—on stasis. This can be a problem especially for children who are experiencing reading challenges and are at-risk of falling further and further behind.
My students need access to materials that foster a multi-sensory approach in reading.
The resources I need will allow the students to connect movements, visuals, sounds, and hands-on activities to help build their foundational skills in reading. Because I provide reading intervention for students in grades K-5 the resources I need range from letter blocks for those beginning readers to build words and manipulate sounds to removable highlighter tape my older students can use for highlighting vowel teams, vocabulary, main ideas, etc. Using games and tools to engage students in a systematic approach has had a lot of success especially for struggling readers.
Studies show that children who are actively engaged exhibit better focus, faster cognitive processing, and more successful memory retention than kids who spend the day sitting still. Having these extra tools and games will help me provide a learning environment that keeps the students active and promotes mental clarity by increasing blood flow to the brain.
