Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

I am beginning my unit on the ocean; however, I would like to focus on understanding the need to preserve coral reefs in addition to the vocabulary of marine life and the ocean environment. I was very impressed with an upcoming film at the IMAX theater at Navy Pier entitled "Deep Sea 3D" and would like my children to have the same experience. I teach in an Early Childhood Special Education program that includes mostly developmentally delayed children from an impoverished area of Chicago. Their ages range from 3-5. After visiting the Shedd Aquarium on 2/24/06, I don't have the heart to request their parents to provide more money for another trip as most struggled with payment. I have never taken a field trip to the IMAX but this film is well worth the money. All of my kids love Nemo which opened up a discussion at the Shedd about the need for a coral reef. This film not only substantiates that claim but it also describes the causes of coral reef devastion and how this will affect future generations. I want them to understand this. They LOVED the aquarium because they enjoyed the sea animals so much. I want them to realize the peril these animals are facing. I would be so appreciative of your support.
