I teach at a Title 1 school where the majority of my kids receive 2 out of 3 of their daily meals at school. My students are faced with many challenges at home. Despite the challenges they face at home, my kids know coming into my classroom they are safe, respected and cared for. My biggest accomplishment in my classroom is my reading area. I want my kids to love to read and be comfortable and relaxed. Sitting on a cold metal chair doesn't really scream "come read a book on me!"
My students are very energetic and like to move around.
Flexible seating allows my students to choose a spot within the room or yes even at their desk to become more comfortable while picking out their latest great find from our classroom library. Reading in my classroom has a way of opening my kid's minds to new ideas, topics, cultures, experiences and future goals. I stress the importance of reading everyday to my students because "The more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." Dr. Seuss

What do kids love these days? Digital interactivity! "At the heart of the program is the hands-on or interactive sort. The sort invites students to group words or pictures representing specific sounds into categories. Most sorts begin with teacher-directed instruction along with questions to guide student learning and generalizations." {Pearsonschool.com}
Memorizing spelling words is fun--said no one ever!
Words Their Way Classroom is an interactive engaging tool that my students can use to LEARN how to spell words and recognize patterns; rather than memorizing. This program aligns instruction with five different developmental stages of spelling--which is a great way to differentiate within my classroom to best fit the needs of all of the students!
