Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My student's come in every day excited to learn and spend time with student's from other schools. Many of them come in with an excited "Hi Ms. B! What are we going to do today?" and end the day with a loud "Thank you, Ms. B!" on their way out the door.
No matter which town they are from, suburban or urban, my students make amazing friendships while working in our classroom on various experiments, projects, and activities.
My students find joy in being able to come from their respective schools for a portion of their day to explore and share their passion for science. About 50% of them come from the surrounding lower-income areas of the city where our school is located.
My Project
Our classroom chemistry lab supplies are running low. The students need 3 different types of salts (Ammonium Chloride, Calcium Chloride and Sodium Chloride) to complete their Cold and Hot Pack Lab, where they investigate the exothermic and endothermic reactions that occur when a solution is made with water.
This is a key opportunity for students to design their own inquiry investigation of how energy is transferred between a system and its surroundings.
Along with these important lab chemicals, they also need more splash proof goggles and nitrile gloves for safety. They will also use the yeast for their investigation of fermentation, which is a type of exothermic reaction.
