Why Don't We See Ourselves In The Books We Read?

Help me give my students interesting books that represent who they are! We want our students to be able to see themselves in the books that they are reading!

My Students

My students are an exceptional bunch of kids. They come to school each day ready and eager to learn. For many of them, school is not just a place to learn, but it also is what many of them would consider a place that feels like home.

They are kids who are eager to learn and become something amazing when they grow up.

All of them have goals of one day going to college, and most importantly having strong careers! They don't allow the outside influences of their environment to affect their learning and eagerness to learn. They are typical kids, in an area which forces kids to grow up quickly. They laugh, have fun, tell stories, and socialize with their classmates. Most of all, they care about school, and come each day eager and willing! What more could a teacher ask for?

My Project

These books will really allow students to become inspired. Often times, they do not want to read a book because they don't see themselves being represented in the books. There are so many great books out there, our school just doesn't have the money to buy them all. We are trying to get students to become more engaged in reading. After asking our students how we could do this, they said, "We want to read about characters like us!" I couldn't agree more! Please help us make this possible for the students in our class! Our class has many different nationalities and races, we want them all to feel represented and proud of their background! I am requesting a broad range of literature titles to diversify our classroom library.
