Why Does Math Work?

Help me give my students tools to "see" what is happening in mathematics. From Algebra Tiles to compasses, visualizing math can make all the difference.

My Project

My students want to know why things work, not just how. These hands-on tools will help them to see why math works.

Going beyond the book will help students reason in math.

Students in 6th grade begin their journey into Algebra. Algebra tiles help students develop a solid foundation in what is going on when letters are added into computation. When students can understand the basics, advanced math becomes easier to do.

Also, in geometry students are asked to translate objects and locate new positions on the coordinate plane. The patty paper, compasses, and protractors help students to visualize what is happening and identify the new location location of the shapes.
