Why Do We Have to Compose and Decompose Numbers?

My Students

My students walk in the door everyday excited and ready to learn, despite the challenges they may encounter before they enter my classroom. We work together to have a fun, collaborative learning environment where we focus on growth mindset. We believe in and encourage each other to do our best each and every day. We believe that fair is that every student gets what they need to grow, not that every student gets the same thing.

I teach at a Title I community STEM elementary school in North Carolina.

Through working with problem and project based learning projects, we are learning to collaborate and problem solve problems in the real world. We are a small community school where we learn to rely and help one another. When one of us achieves, we all do.

My students work hard and achieve, especially when given the resources to do so. I hope to take away the challenges I can and equip them with 21st century skills, so they can achieve their best!

My Project

By having these hands on manipulative kids, my students will understand why composing and decomposing numbers are necessary when computing. So many times students just memorize steps and do not understand what is happening in math. This will also be great for my ESL and EC students to have hands on instruction to better "see" what is happening.

My students will be able to fully understand why math happens instead of just how to do it.

This will help to develop their computational fluency so they will become fluent with problem solving as well. I cannot wait to "see" the lightbulb turn on through the use of these manipulatives.
