Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
At our school, we focus on individualized learning where each student is academically pushed in regards to their personal learning level. Most students are neighborhood students who face many difficulties outside of school. It is a Title I school in Providence, RI where 100% of students receive free breakfast and lunch. Students look at school as a place where potential is limitless. They look forward to using iPads, computers, audio books, and creating projects to make learning fun. Our classroom is a place of respect, care, being mindful, and diversity. Not only do I care for my students, but they care for me. This positive relationship gives them hope to a better tomorrow.
We are a 100% free breakfast and lunch school that encourages community members to become involved as often as possible.
Community outreach is extremely imperative in creating a school with a positive school culture. Students come together and work with members of society who help motivate and teach them.
My Project
Reading allows students to sit back and relax with intrinsic motivation in choosing a book of their choice! It allows students to travel the world by utilizing their imaginations. Student creativity is a twenty-first century skill that is imperative for growth and development. As educators, we are preparing our students for jobs that haven't been created yet.
Giving students opportunities to engage in creative reading allows expressive freedom in a classroom environment where students feel safe to share ideas and builds confidence.
My students could use some new math books, STEM books, and hands-on fun in terms of fractions games and STEM builders. We each have our own personalities, talents, interests, hopes, motivations, anxieties, and dispositions. Profound things can happen when students are given room to explore their own interests and capacities!
As an educator, my goal for this project is to allow students voice and choice around the books that they are reading and STEM/Math activities that they engage with. This will in turn be extrinsically motivating to students and increase reading levels by at least one level over the next few months. I strategically picked books that are culturally relevant as I intend to help students better understand their own cultures, the cultures of others, and to promote a sense of cultural tolerance and coexistence. I believe in personalization in terms of considering differences in teaching students. I want students to learn what they have in common and expose opportunities for them to pursue their individual interests and strengths. Please help fund this project and help intrinsically motivate my students to increase their reading levels and make learning fun with math/STEM games!
