Do you remember how difficult it was to sit still in middle school? How uncomfortable and "standardized" the seats were in every classroom? Or how much you were told to "sit still"? Most middle school aged children cannot help their inability to sit still. Some because of diagnoses, but others because their body is going through natural growth spurts. It is just the way things are in middle school.
My 6th graders are eager to learn, but oftentimes get distracted by their pent up energy.
We do interactive and engaging lessons, but think about how much more we could learn if our seating helped us focus.
My Project
Flexible seating is all the rage right now in education. For good reason. Students need to be comfortable to maximize their focus on learning. Think about your ideal learning environment. Is it in a classroom with hard plastic chairs? I think not.
Most middle school students have an exceptionally hard time controlling their focus.
This is due to the natural changes occurring with this age group, but the Wobble chairs, cushions, and balance balls are just one more way to help them focus and learn at such a critical age. Trust me, these alternatives to the dreaded plastic chairs will not go to waste!
