My students are a group of eager high school students who want to explore the world of robotics, engineering, computer science, and business technology. They are interested in these quickly growing fields, which will play an integral role in the advancement of our society. These students have the opportunity to be the leaders of tomorrow, and shape the world for years to come. Students from all different walks of life will be learning to work together to achieve a common goal.
My Project
This year will be the first year that WHS will participate in the FIRST Robotics Competition. FRC is an international organization that promotes engineering, computer science, and business administration through a series of robotic competitions. Students build and program their own robot to compete against other schools from across the country and world. FIRST provides each team with the basic robotics kit every season; included with the entry fee. However, the team is responsible for acquiring tools, and any additional building supplies like a tool storage cabinet, hole punch kit, and screwdriver set. The students only have 6 weeks to build once the challenge is released. Not only will these tools benefit this year's students, but they will be used for years to come by future teams.
FIRST Robotics Competition is the ultimate Sport for the Mind.
Students that have participated call it the "hardest fun you will ever have!" Under strict rules, limited resources, and an intense six-week time limit, teams of students are challenged to raise funds, design a team "brand," hone teamwork skills, and build and program industrial-size robots to play a difficult field game against like-minded students. It’s as close to real-world engineering as a student can get. FRC also has a vast array of scholarships students can take advantage of after competing. These are not limited to only engineering and computer science, but also many aspects of business as well. We have local volunteers from the engineering field who will help the students build and create their robot, but the level of our success will depend on community involvement.
