As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with many challenges both in and out of school. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking provide my students with high-interest leveled readers that will help engage all of my students, especially my reluctant readers.
Many of my students are being raised in single parent households and all of the students receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status.
These are just two issues that may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not afford them the opportunities that students in other walks of life may get to experience.
From the minute my studnets walk in the door of my classroom I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives however, I can control the types of experiences they encounter during the school day. I am hopeful that I am inspiring all of the students to foster a love of reading and conintue on the path to become life long learners.
These leveled readers will provide me with materials to differentiate instruction. Learning will be enhanced because I will be able to match student characteristics to instruction and assessment. Using differentiated instruction will allow all students to access the same classroom curriculum by providing entry points, learning tasks, and outcomes that are tailored to their specific needs. Using this instructional approach, I can incorporate a variety of strategies into my small group lessons. I will be able to tap into their skill levels and background knowledge and build on what they already know. When a child feels successful, they are more willing to work towards the goals set in front of them.
