My students are the most wonderful, intelligent, kind, inquisitive, funny, and enthusiastic children in the world!
They work hard to grow and learn and live up to my every expectation.
Our small elementary school is located in rural Wisconsin, in an increasingly impoverished county. I serve all four K through 4th-grade students. I work to help them, as one of our school mottos states: "Grow their brains." I co-teach with each teacher several times a year. Together, we believe that our children deserve rich, engaging, hands-on lessons, and we go the extra mile to make that happen.
My Project
Tracy Maurer is a successful author of many fiction and nonfiction books written for children. My students love her because she writes about people that they connect to. For example, her book, John Deere, That's Who! is a favorite in our rural farming community.
My students would love to interact with a real-life author and Tracey Maurer is perfect for that!
Each year, I arrange and facilitate a Third Grade Writing Conference. It is just like a conference that adults would attend. There is a keynote speaker, concurrent sessions, and panels for question and answer periods. The students all dress up and leave the day feeling like REAL AUTHORS! When they work with published authors, like Maurer, they see writing as a real-world endeavor. That has immediate impact on them as learners. Having Tracey Maurer as our keynote and conducting a session would motivate students to see themselves as part of a writing community and that motivation breeds actual writing.
