Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

With your help, my students should no longer fear the "Big, Bad Bard" AKA William Shakespeare. I currently teach English to 150 sophomores at a high poverty level high school. Many of my students are economically disadvantaged and more than half are considered "at risk," LEP (Limited English Proficiency), or refugee students.

The very name Shakespeare is often enough to strike fear into the hearts of students. Now imagine telling a classroom of 10th graders (keep in mind that many are special education, LEP, or even refugee students) that we will be reading a whole Shakespearian play. Not only will they have to read the play, but understand what's going on, and analyze Shakespeare's style! I have yet to have anyone pass out, but every year, I do get a few who look like they are going to be sick! Once I start handing out the battered, mismatched copies that I have salvaged with a lot of masking tape, even the most stalwart students begin to turn green. The copies of "Much Ado About Nothing" that are in my possession are from my own personal collection that I have been buying over the past five years. And let's just say they have seen better days. The school's copies are missing chunks of the play, sometimes whole scenes, and the textbook has a rather dry version of Shakespeare's "Julius Caesar." If I want to branch out from the textbook and teach one of the comedies, I'm on my own. But luckily, dear donors, I have you to help me out!

With 35 copies for a class set of No Fear Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing," I think I can change the way students see Shakespeare, acting, and literature in general! There are many perks to using this style of text. The No Fear editions contain the play as it was originally written on one side of the book and a modern English translation on the other side. While we will be reading the Shakespearian version aloud in class, students can use the modern language version to follow along, clarify their understanding, and even catch up if they are out of class for the day. I plan to use these texts to help with our analysis of Shakespearian style and language, as well as provide support for the special education, LEP, and refugee population in my classroom. These texts will also help with mobility for our actors. I fully believe that Shakespeare intended his plays to be both read aloud and acted out. These compact texts will allow the students to hold a book in one hand to read, while using the other hand to gesture, dance, or swordfight! Believe me, this is very difficult to do with a heavy textbook! And with new copies, I won't have to worry about losing pages!

Lastly, I think that these texts will make learning fun for my students. In case you didn't know, Shakespeare sneaks some pretty funny jokes into his writing. I think once my students actually get the jokes, they will enjoy Shakespeare's works much more. I think that if my students learn to appreciate Shakespeare, they will be more willing to give other authors and genres a chance too. Exposing students to new authors, styles, and experiences can be beneficial to their overall learning, college readiness, and even real world readiness. You can make it possible for my students to not only have fun with Mr. Shakespeare, but to enjoy literature in general. Please help me show my students that Shakespeare doesn't have to be scary!
