Our school is clean and colorful. It is certainly not new, but from the beginning of kindergarten, we are all taught to respect and appreciate taking care of what we do have for property and space. In kindergarten, this includes wiping our feet before entering the building. Unfortunately, the large rugs that are supposed to contain the sludge, wood chips, and snow from our boots are worn thin and do not do the job they were intended. The kindergartners feel powerless to control the slippery mess and want to help. It is too much for them to wipe up so my wonderful students want to help the school with new rugs!
My Project
Although safety is not as romantic or exciting as books or field trips, it must be the most important on a daily basis. Heavy duty floor mats are absolutely necessary for our midwestern weather: ice, snow, mud, torrential rains! As children get off the buses or walk to school, they are trailing in the muck, salt, and sand. During recess the chunks of woodchips, gravel, leaves come through those doors. After school brings in folks to the gyms for watching games and events. Whoops! Careful, grandma!
Danger!
Slippery when wet! Custodians must constantly mop and remop these same spots. We know that heavy duty all weather hall rugs can save our risk of falling and over- utilizing the maintenance people's time. There are two sets of stairs staff and students use to head toward the classrooms. My kindergarten wing is just steps away from this puddly area and then the stairs! Slippery boots and stairs do not mix for little feet.
