Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a Title I school, we wish to afford our students the opportunity to use hands on science experiments at school as many do not have opportunities to get their hands on these materials at home.
My students are 6th grade students.
They are creative, questioning, challenging and worth your investment. My students vary in what they have already learned but they are all capable of learning anything given the opportunity. There is a wide range of learning levels within our classroom.
My Project
I have done this owl pellet project in the past, but it has gotten too costly for me to continue this type of project without some funding. What I enjoy most is seeing the students become excited about
learning. I always enjoy watching the students when they first get the owl pellet. The most common reaction at first is “EWWW!” However, as soon as they start the dissection their excitement increases. They are so engaged in the lesson and their interaction with other students is unbelievable! They are truly learning by doing. It is a lesson that they do not forget for a very long time.
My students need owl pellets and goggles for a science project. They need the color pencils to write their rough drafts before finalizing paper work.
This project is a hands-on method where students could actually “see” the food chain in a very real way where books and videos maybe not be enough.
Many of the students struggle with learning English and understanding the concepts described in their textbooks. This project will give them the opportunity to witness the flow of energy and the digestive process in a very real, concrete way.
