Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our program draws public school students who test in the top 0.5% on IQ tests. Yet, highly gifted students are at higher risk for behavioral problems, under-performing, and eventually dropping out if they do not have a differentiated curriculum that engages and challenges them.
Our program seeks to challenge them with deeper exploration and hands-on activities, but it is up to teachers and parents to provide materials.
These students are inquisitive, thoughtful, and desperate to learn more than standard textbooks and kits can provide.
How do bright students get as "wise as owls" (or about owls) when they live in urban areas where owls are rarely heard and never seen? By dissecting owl pellets!
My Project
Dissecting regurgitated owl pellets lets students examine many aspects of life science, including food webs, predator-prey relationships, and the functional beauty of skeletal structures. Working in teams, students will gently tease through the regurgitated pellets to find tiny bones, insects, and other mysterious contents. They will reassemble the tiny skeletons of digested prey and interpret their findings.
For this wonderful opportunity, we are requesting owl pellets containing different prey that students will have to guess and rebuild. We also need charts to help identify the contents, trays to sort them, and long forceps so students can do this delicate work in teams. This experiment will require focus, tenacity and imagination.
These children would love to learn as much as they can, but need your help!
By providing this fascinating opportunity, you would be challenging them to reach their full potential. I cannot wait to share their theories on the How’s, Why’s, and Whoooo’s with you.
