Our school is located in Queens, New York. It is a multicultural neighborhood and our students are primarily English Language Learners. It is a high poverty area and some of our students have difficulty purchasing basic school supplies.
If there is one universal commonality among all children it is their natural curiosity.
My students are no different. This makes them particularly interested in science. Together we use this curiosity to make discoveries such as how does a magnet create electricity or which adaptations does a cheetah have that allow it to run so fast.
My Project
Each year our students learn about food chains and food webs. However they don't always seem to understand the important role food chains and webs play in a balanced ecosystem,
Owl Pellets provide a perfect way for students to see the food web in action.
Students can dissect these pellets to construct a food chain consisting of the prey the animal has eaten. In this way, students are able to understand the delicate balance that makes our ecosystems work. These materials provide a authentic science experience and require students to use their critical thinking skills to understand the predator prey relationship.
