Who You Gonna Call--Chemical Reactions the Fun Way---Slime!!!
My students need to have opportunities to do hands-on experiments that are fun exciting and memorable. Students learn best when they are able to do and not just watch. They need plastic cups, a scale, sticks, and slime-making chemicals!
Do you remember the movie Ghost Busters? Do you remember being in middle school? Do you remember your science class? Well I want the students at our school to remember science. I want them to see that science is not only educational but also fun!! Science is everywhere and science is fun.
The students at our school are full of wonder.
They are always asking why and how. These students come from many different backgrounds and many many places. If you where to come into our classes you will see a very diverse student population and a wide variety of science knowledge. What you might not see at first glance is a group of students that wants to know more about their world.
My Project
Students love learning about chemistry, and a favorite chemistry laboratory is learning about the science of slime. Students read an article from Chem Matters called “The Science of Slime,” which they learn about non-Newtonian liquids. The reading familiarizes students with the nature of polymer bonding and teaches that there are different types of fluids. The teacher leads student volunteers in a dramatization of the chemical bonding that occurs in making slime as discussed in the reading. The dramatization helps students visualize the concept from the reading that the physical properties of a substance change when that substance is combined in a chemical reaction. Students then get to actually make the slime and use it in a variety of observational tests, (for example stretch test, stickiness test, etc).I n order to create slime my class will need sandwich bags, sticks, 2 compact scales, plastic cups, and key ingredients for making slime.
Having such experiences will allow our students an educational advantage in science and technology as they prepare to enter high school.
It will help to enhance activities that make science fun and exciting to learn. Our students will develop of a love of science and learning.
