Ms. Osborne from Dallas GA is requesting supplies through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need owl pellets and dissection supplies, for the hands-on experience of making the food web prey/predator connection somewhere other than in a book or drawing.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Competing with exciting games and TV is often difficult in the classroom. Being able to retrieve and basically reassemble the remains of a rodent that an owl has eaten and digested would be right up there in excitement for most of my kids!
Many of our students are economically disadvantaged and have not had the opportunity to experience many enriching things.
Add to that the fact that we are in a brand new school (good thing) and consequently have almost no science lab supplies due to budget cuts (bad thing), they will still be limited in their experiences until we can acquire supplies. When I learned of DonorsChoose, it was like a gift!
Because they lack many of life's more enriching experiences, these students are very curious, love "neat" things and get excited over them. I can imagine watching them and seeing their faces as they pick the owl pellets apart and find the small bones and other parts of the rodent skeleton. They would lay them out, and once all were found, proceed to try and reconstruct the anatomy of the owl's dinner! They have repeatedly asked me if we would get to dissect anything this year, and I have had to continue to tell them that I just didn't know if it would be possible because of the budget. Oh how I would love to surprise them!
I feel that this project will provide my students with a unique middle school experience that will not likely be matched until their high school biology class.
They are constantly looking for something to excite and stimulate their interests, and I can see this kindling an interest in science that I and book/paper projects alone would not be able to do! That in turn would be very exciting for me!
