Mrs. Ledman from Indianapolis IN is requesting educational kits & games through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need a variety of games and activities to work on comprehension; Can Do!, Match & Sort Early Reading Comprehension Quickies, Picture It! and more. Allowing students to comprehension journals will make sure they are practicing these skills daily.

The students in my classroom come from low income/high poverty and are faced with challenges both inside and outside of the classroom. Over 90% of the students in my school qualify for free or reduced price lunch. With all of the challenges that my students may face, they are always eager to see what they will be learning.
They have a thirst for knowledge and are always ready to see what new topics we will be covering.
They come in each morning with a smile on their face and asking what do we get to learn today.
In first grade, understanding what you read is key to making growth. Many students are able to sound out words, but answering questions helps students to make growth. The different games and activities will be used during whole group reading lessons and also in small groups. These games and activities will be a station during guided reading. The readers will be used with a teacher during guided reading time.
Deborah Reed says "Teaching comprehension while students are still mastering foundational reading skills will not only allow for students to demonstrate age-appropriate skills, but it also will help reinforce the reasons we read in the first place: to derive meaning, understanding, and enjoyment from a book or other text." Imagine if students had more opportunities to work on their comprehension skills while mastering the foundational skills.
While students are working on their comprehension, working of fluency and stamina are also important. Having students have access to time timers will allow them to time themselves as they read to see how they have improved.
The games and activities will be able to be applied to any text (book, magazine, article, etc.) that the students are reading. This will give students many opportunities during the school day to gain a deeper understanding of what they are reading. Daily reading comprehension journals will allow students to work on skills throughout the year. Each day they will be expected to build on their knowledge of the story.
It is important for students to have access to books that are at their just right reading level. Having book totes will allow for students to have easy access to their just right books to help master foundational skills.
