Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a wonderful class of twenty-five third-graders. My students love to come to school to learn and experience all that we do in third grade.
I have found that my students really enjoy reading biographies.
Unfortunately, neither my classroom library nor the school library have many biography books for emerging readers. The set of Who Was? Biography books will give them all an opportunity to read biographies about a wonderfully diverse group of people.
We are a Title I, low-performing school with a majority of English Language Learners. My third grade class includes many emerging readers who would benefit from these books. The subject matter and the writing style, along with the reading level, will give these students more reading opportunities.
My Project
Who Was? is a delightful series of biographies that are geared to elementary readers. Our reading program does not provide the opportunity for them to read diverse biographies, at their reading levels.
The biographies reflect a diverse group of people (including Marie Curie, Cesar Chavez, Harriet Tubman, Luis Armstrong) that my students can relate to.
Adding this series of biography books to my classroom library will give them an opportunity to improve their reading and introduce them to an interesting group historical figures.
My third graders, regardless of their reading level, all enjoy reading. Thank you for giving my students the opportunity to enhance their reading selection in the classroom, and making our classroom library more diverse.
