My students are English Language Learners in a low income area.
Each day they are working to learn everything in first grade AND English at the same time. They are so eager to learn and love coming to school every day. I work hard to make the lessons exciting and easy for them to understand.
My Project
We got the Financial Literacy ball rolling with another DonorsChoose.org project. We got everything we needed to start a class store. Students earn money for everything from homework to being respectful. They keep track of their money online and purchase classroom rewards each Friday.
This has been going great, but I found some areas to build upon. They need more practice counting and basic math skills. The Hot Dots are an exciting way to practice these basic math skills in the classroom. I want to get money games for them to practice at home.
The next step is to try to earn a million dollars! We need the iPad mini for this portion. It is quite difficult for all my students to enter their "earnings" on one iPad. We will use the iPad mini to enter daily earnings and to see our net worth using the bankaroo app.
Each student has unlimited opportunities to earn money throughout the day.
Cleaning up, participating, being a good sport at recess and working hard are just a few ways they can build their daily net worth. Students will be able to use their money to buy classroom rewards each week, but we will add them all together and keep a running tally. This will motivate them to work harder, improve their number sense, work as a team, and teach them financial literacy.
