Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My special education students are an outstanding example of representing our school community with pride and academic excellence. I teach over 100 students and 9 classes in grades K-6. Their hard work and commitment are one of the reasons our school is a National Title I School of Excellence and is recognized as an A+++ elementary school.
This coming school year we are expanding our STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) curriculum and instruction across all grade levels.
I am looking forward to my students using their amazing talents and skills in new and exciting ways this school year.
My Project
This past school year I was part of a pilot program that gave students in my 9 classes an opportunity for 1-on-1 technology use. It was wonderful to engage students in meaningful digital learning and see their motivation and excitement. Now, the pilot is over and laptops have been redistributed out of my classroom. I am working hard with your help to continue to provide technology opportunities for my 100 special education students.
I have learned that integrating technology enhances effective teaching practices, promotes communication among students, and allows students to extend learning outside of the classroom.
Technology is an impactful way for me to reach all of my diverse learners and helps me to personalize student learning to match their interests and goals. For example, noting that several 4th grade students liked hockey, I was able to do a curriculum unit from Everfi called Future Goals that incorporated math and hockey.
Having Chromebooks in the classroom helped students to collaborate more efficiently. Through the use of Google Classroom and other apps like Google Docs and Sheets, students can connect with each other and me in real time during class lessons or add other perspectives at home or on the go. This ability to stretch the classroom beyond the hour long class period is crucial to building deeper understanding and reflecting on what students need most. Thanks for your generous donation!
