My students need these bean bag chairs in order to work and read comfortably on the floor, which is their preferred place to work instead of just sitting at their desks all day!
I teach 21 students in a Title I school in the Gold Country of the rural California foothills. We have a mixed socio-economic population, primarily of White and Hispanic ethnicity, with 60% of students qualifying for free lunch.
During the day, students find it more comfortable to work on the floor.
Students do work at their desks, but also spend a lot of time working on the floor. This is a well-liked time, as students are more comfortable on the floor and are able to move around, which helps some of the more "fidgety" students to concentrate.
I find this also can stimulate conversation and deeper-level thinking.
My Project
Children find it hard to sit still - for that matter, so do adults! In order to make learning more comfortable, fun, and enjoyable, my class enjoys moving to the floor and working there. There, students are not constrained by their chair; they can change positions, lean forward and backward, and stretch, and feel freer to move around. I find this actually can create deeper thinking and conversations! I firmly believe that students need to know that learning is not being made to sit in a chair all day, that moving around while learning makes learning more enjoyable and likeable.
In order to accomplish this, I have used my own funds to purchase large pillows and floor chairs.
Having these bean bag chairs will add to the comfort of working on the floor and therefore, to each child's learning.
