My Students

What makes my students special? My students are hard-working, driven, eager to learn, READERS! They love to read! We make time for silent reading everyday. We engage in book talks and book clubs and we trade books with each other. We read books aloud and in pairs, sprawled around the room in our favorite reading spots.

My students inspire me!

My students are often the ones finishing books before I do! Just as my students inspire me, they inspire each other and push each other to go deeper into their literature. They eagerly offer predictions, make inferences, and explore 'what if' scenarios.

We are presently in the middle of a 30-book Challenge, trying to read 30 books, of different genres, by the end of the year. These kids are up for the challenge!

My Project

I have selected 20 high interest, informational books, designed specifically for middle school kids, to fill our classroom library. I requested two of every book so that students can read the nonfiction text with a buddy. Paired reading is a research-based fluency strategy used to increase fluency and comprehension.

With your funding, every student could have an engaging nonfiction book in their hands, that they WANT to read!

Not only would students be one step closer to completing their 30 book challenge, they would have mentor texts to use during our informational writing unit. We would be able to examine the structure and writing style of these published books which students could reproduce in their own writing.

With topics such as brain surgery, witches, sniffer dogs, car science, and astroids hitting the earth, middle school students will be more than tempted to pick up one of these new books. This book selection was recommended by Goodreads, specifically for 5th-8th grades (which means there are pictures, graphics, 80-100 pages and not overly technical). These books will be highly motivating to read!
