Help me give my students a set of The Egypt Game, a novel that shows them the spectacle of rambling mansions, garden mazes, and hidden treasure.
My class is a wonderful group of 6th graders from Barstow, California. They are eager to learn new content, especially in Math and Science. I have about 20 students on Individualized learning plans and Individualized education plans due to their low reading levels and specific learning disabilities. The thing is, they love to read!
My students are book-loving, avid readers, enthusiastic and motivated learners.
They look forward to reading time every day. They are so proud of themselves and can't wait to share with me and their classmates their accomplishments and when they reach different goals.
This novel will tie in wonderfully with their ancient civilizations unit on Ancient Egypt. As they read, the students will be able to draw parallels to the history of Ancient Egypt. A majority of my students live in a poor area of town. Many of these students are classified as homeless and many tend to live in hotels. They have to bounce around from place to place. Many of them do not have anything to call their own. Allowing them to have their own book will give them a sense of ownership and something permanent to call their very own.
