My students need 30 aprons, fabric markers, tacky glue, gems, popcorn machine, scoop, snow cone syrup, paper plates, and disposable gloves to continue our Cooking Club Project for the 2018-2019 school year.
The old adage of "How will this benefit me?" is often asked by my students. We feel that through this club, the math, reading, science, and the social interaction skills these students will learn will underscore the classroom experience while helping these students mature within the community. Our small rural school is nestled among the mountains with over 50% of the students participating in the free or reduced-price lunch program. For some of these students, the breakfast and lunch that is received through this program are the only hot meal that they receive throughout the day. Since both parents are working full-time jobs, the students are not being taught the necessary social and/or survival skills required in today's society. Through a club atmosphere, we will prepare students for skills that are necessary to move them beyond being dependent children to being more independent productive citizens within the community.
My Project
Due to limited district budgets, funding is not available for additional supplies and replacements. Therefore the addition of aprons, popcorn machine, disposable gloves, fabric markers, paper plates, ziploc bags, tacky glue, and snow cone syrup will serve as replacements components in order to continue our program and ensure the success of our students. With your help, we will prepare students with the necessary skills by teaching them metric conversions, reading and following recipes, dry to liquid conversions, chemical and heat induced reactions, preparation of basic meals, setting the table, food preparation and safety, creating a budget, and shopping for necessary food items while maintaining a budget. Again, I cannot express how important these skills are to help reinforce learning and move our students from beyond dependent children to being more independent citizens within the working community.
In the context of the school club, we can have fun while reinforcing the cross-curricular mathematical and scientific curriculum as well as teach important life skills.
Within our club atmosphere, we will prepare students for skills that are necessary to move them beyond being dependent children to being more independent productive citizens within their communities.
