Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is an amazing mix of students with multiple disabilities in a very low-income community. My students come from immigrant families and are all learning English as their second language. Due to the complexity of their learning disabilities, my classroom is filled with games, puzzles and fun, artistic ways of expressing our learning. We do not do very many paper and pencil activities. My classroom always appears messy and chaotic due to paint constantly being used, puzzle pieces out, clay and Play-Doh everywhere. Despite the messiness, the joy that happens in the classroom makes the mess worth it.
My Project
We have been given brand new curriculum which we are being asked to follow. I do not have any of the supplemental materials or hands-on activities which go along with the curriculum. I am looking for items to supplement the curriculum. An ant colony, sensory eggs, a farm set and an aquarium will give my students the hands-on opportunities they need to be successful in gaining knowledge and skills about animals and their habitats.
Being able to touch, see, smell, make and move the items, will give my students to opportunity for the knowledge to sink in.
They are not students who are able to sit and read a text and answer questions on a paper and pencil test. We are a classroom which is often covered in paint, dirt and glue because that is how we best learn.
