The cost of 2 video cables from CDW Inc. and a 27" Color television from Best Buy is $357, including shipping and <a target="new" href="http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm" onclick="g_openWindow('http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm', 300, 800, 'fulfillwindow');return false;">fulfillment</a>.
Each day, my high school English I students participate in what we call the DOG: Daily Oral Grammar. This is where an incorrect sentence is placed upon the COW (computer on wheels) and projected to the television for all to see. Students have to write the sentence and correct it. A volunteer then goes to the computer (with an Expo marker) and corrects the sentence. If one mistake is made, the student must sit while another takes over. This goes on until the sentence is correct. This is a hands-on grammar practice that allows students to learn all of the parts of grammar (punctuation, capitalization, subject/verb agreement, and so on)at one time while having fun. It's almost like "students become teachers." It is not boring and it enlivens the classroom.
Just last week, a student shouted, "Who let the DOG out?" and began laughing. To my surprise, the 32" television was completly black and and on fire! Needless to say, the DOG has been out of the pen since that day. We have no television to use and no funds to replace it. Now, the television is not only used for the DOG. It is also used for the students' powerpoint presentations, their video/literature partnerships, and their Internet Scavenger Hunts. In my classroom, we have only one computer. That is why it is hooked to the 32" television. The students have been lost without it! With the television, the entire class participated in and enjoyed technology.
In this proposal I am asking for a 27" to 32" television set so that we can bring home the DOG and begin using our technology sources again. The students need to participate in DOG each day because test scores show they need much improvement in Language Arts. We have no other technology in the classroom with the exception of the computer to which the television was connected. Not only will this help with their grammar, it will also help with all of their power point presentations, their Internet Scavenger Hunts (class research), and their video/literature connections. This television will also allow us to share clips from UnitedStreaming.com, another beneficial source. So, I'm ready to put the DOG back on with help from a friend.
