I'm a 7-12th-grade special education teacher. I teach math, English, literature, and functional living classes. My students learn best when they can understand how every standard relates directly to them. For this reason, each year we have a different 'theme' that I incorporate into each lesson like: "Learning the Backstory,” "Tolerance,” "Mindfulness,” "Music,” etc. This year, we are focusing on self-esteem and self-help! All lessons are tailored to the individual student and their unique needs. We spend a lot of time working on "employability" and daily living skills. Social interaction and personal skills have to be implicitly taught, as well as the importance of basic hygiene.
As a class, we talk through hard situations they're going through outside of school.
These students are truly like a family. They're with me for 6 years and I have close relationships with all of them and their parents (I grew up in the town where I teach). These kids are everything to me!
My Project
Okay, so this is a big deal. Our network printers at school are fabulous! They are dependable and we love them. There are a couple fatal flaws though when it comes to access from our special education classroom. We work from iPads a lot. We have students who are unable to physically grasp a pencil, so nearly all their work is completed on an iPad. To turn in an assignment, we have to email each file to a staff member and they have to go to a physical computer and print it. This has to happen in a different classroom, often. If we could get a printer that allows AirPrint, we could print right then and there and assignments could be printed and turned in within seconds. The other issue is that our network printers only print in black and white. That's great for most situations, but in our classroom, we need color. Our assignments are modified to fit the needs of the students in our room. Many times, we work with pictures rather than text. We need it for visual schedules, we recently needed to print in color for a science assignment concerning genetics. If we could print from the iPad AND be able to print in color, I'm fairly certain that all our problems would be solved (ha!).
I do plan to subscribe to HP instant ink, and I don't mind paying for that subscription myself, but we could use some help getting the actual printer!
I know that every teacher would love to have a color printer in their own classroom, but for us, this is more than just a need. We will use it daily for individualized instruction.
Also, we need a durable case for an iPad (easy to carry for students with physical disabilities).
