Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Do you remember the first time you realized that you loved learning about something in school? That moment comes when you know you have a favorite subject or maybe a teacher who really understands you and motivates you. I teach science full-time to eighty fourth-graders who attend a large, public, bilingual school in Washington, DC. I know that STEM-science, technology, engineering and mathematics-is exciting for my students and I want them to love learning about it in our classroom. I hope to be that teacher who inspires them to reach for the stars.

One of the many reasons my fourth-grade students are so special to me is because they represent the next generation of scientists, mathematicians, technology specialists and engineers!

They are the linguistically and culturally diverse faces of future STEM leaders. My students love asking questions, recording observations, designing models, testing prototypes and analyzing data. They are eager learners who love exploring the natural world and brainstorming many ways to solve design challenges.

My Project

I started last year by asking students to read non-fiction books whenever we had time for independent reading in my science classroom. Since they mostly preferred fiction and our library offered such a small selection of engaging non-fiction books, it was not initially a well-received suggestion! When I started filling the room with non-fiction books from the public library, my students began to realize that reading non-fiction was not a punishment, it was fun!

This year, I want to make sure that my students have access to their very own high-quality classroom library from day one!

The books on my wishlist were selected because I know students already love them and have a hard time putting them down. Whether students prefer those giant everything-you-ever-wanted-to-know-about-whatever-topic books, science comic books or biographies, I want them to be able to find those engaging books right in the classroom.

Your donation to this project will ensure that my fourth graders come to learn that reading nonfiction rocks! Truth is power. Knowledge is power. Your gift will help my students become critical readers and thinkers and I believe that's exactly what the world needs now.
