Celebrate Black Teachers and Students
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Low-income. Homeless. High poverty. These are words that people often use to describe our scholars.
However, the words people should concentrate on are high achievers, determined learners, and creative thinkers.
We are scholars who have a hunger to learn, a passion for knowledge, and a need to succeed. We are looking to expand our critical-thinking skills, explore our creativity, and develop our talents for twenty-first-century learning. We are looking to develop our gifts and talents and need your help to do so.
My Project
During our most recent reading unit, it became apparent that our classroom library is lacking relevant biographies. My scholars were asked to find a nonfiction text that they could relate to but this proved to be difficult when every text was about someone who lived long ago and was of another race. We need books that our scholars can relate to and interact with.
My scholars need relevant biographies to help them learn about nonfiction texts. By brining in books with household names like Michelle Obama, Barack Obama, Steve Jobs, Dr. Seuss, and so many more my scholars will be able to choose books that they are not only excited about but that also are relevant to their lives.
