Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a new, innovative high school. To encourage our students to take 3 and 4 years of science, we offer many elective science courses, one of them Forensics! The kids love it! But being a CSI requires lots of materials.
My students are juniors and seniors at a high school in Southern California.
We are a very low socioeconomic school, with 97% minority and second language learner students. Most of the kids practically live at the school, coming as early as 5:30 and staying as long as possible. They love it here because the teachers and coaches give them a place of safety, learning, and enjoyment everyday. The labs and activities that I run in my forensics class bring real-life science into the classroom and are exposing my students to something they would never see elsewhere. Seeing pictures is not the same as doing it and doing it costs money that our school does not have.
My Project
My students are learning how forensic science and other sciences can be used in the real world. Many of the kids are considering college and careers in law enforcement because of my class. Before they had just hoped to graduate and had no definite plans for their future. By donating these resources you will give my students more experiences and encourage them to continue to love learning and science.
I am requesting an Inkless Shoe print kit, which will be used by the students to take shoe prints of staff members in order to compare the prints to the print found at the scene of the mock crime and determine who is the culprit. I am also requesting gloves for the mock crime scene, since it is a golden rule in forensics not to contaminate the scene! And the slides are for analyzing trace evidence (fibers, hair, dirt) under the microscope.
Taking actual shoe prints of teachers and administrators will have a huge impact on their learning versus simply taking the notes and seeing a video.
The students will learn more by doing and create memories and inspiration to go on to college and/or a meaningful career.
