Each day my students walk through my classroom door with smiles on their faces ready to learn. No matter what they may have experienced that morning at home, on the bus, or on the way to school, they know that there is a class full of friends ready to love them and root for them.
My class is a family that helps, loves, supports, and even sometimes fights just like siblings.
I teach two ELA blocks. My 42 students come from different backgrounds, neighborhoods, and economic classes. Although they are very different, they view each other as equals and brothers and sisters. We build each other up and encourage each other throughout the day. My children deserve anything they want, unfortunately, I can't afford it alone.
My Project
Only 17% of parents of kids ages 9–11 read aloud to their children. Yet 83% of kids ages 6–17 say being read to is something they either loved or liked a lot. (Scholastic’s “Kids & Family Reading ReportTM”)
I have chosen books that are missing from my classroom library that I can read aloud to my students.
Some of them will be used as mentor texts for writing which will provide examples of what their writing can and will be one day. Some of them will be used to teach a specific reading skill or strategy.
Each of the books purchased will be used to provide excellent examples of great stories that will develop deeper vocabulary and the drive in my students to read more books. I believe that the more a child is read to, the more likely he or she will succeed in school. I will enjoy reading these books as much as my students will enjoy listening to them!
