Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work with a very high needs population, in the largest urban city in our state. I work in a small school with a high population of students who come from homes where English isn't the first language. Many of my students also come from homes where parents don't speak any English. Over 50% of our students come from homes that do not have English spoken at all. There are over 15 different languages represented within our community of 375 students. The only time many of these students have access to the language is throughout the school day.
In addition to the language barriers we face daily, my students also have disabilities that range from ADHD to autism.
They come from homes where parents are unavailable, due to work or due to the lack of understanding of their child's disability.
My Project
The students at my school look forward to field day every year. Since the school is in a large, urban setting, there isn't always the opportunity to play at a park or in the grass. The students from our school are grades kindergarten through sixth grade. They love hula hoops, gymnastics, blowing bubbles, potato sack races, and freeze tag. These organized games help the kids socialize and get fresh air. The kids spend so much time on technology and often lack the basic social skills needed to get through the school day and to navigate through society. Field day helps them with structured fun.
