I teach 6th grade students to find a love for reading and writing. The students in my classes come from a variety of backgrounds and ethnicities, and most come from a home of poverty. As a school-wide initiative, we focus on reading for pleasure and for information and the students embrace it. Sixth grade students set reading goals and achieve them. They are so proud of their accomplishments and growth.
Students in my classes are always looking for the newest book to read or the one that would a great fit for them.
While we have a library at our school, most students don't have money to order books of their own. I love to see their enthusiasm. It flows into every class and also in their own achievement.
My Project
There is no denying that reading helps in every subject area and is a love that will last a lifetime. Every time they open up a cover, they are whisked off into a place that is only bound by the scope of their imagination. Students in my class complain when they don't get time to finish their page or a chapter they are reading. It warms my heart.
With the donation of these books, I will be able to create book clubs as part of my unit plans.
Students will be working in groups, reading the same book, and then collaborate about the parts they read. Book clubs help students learn to share ideas without judgement. It also helps students to consider alternative ways of thinking. When students are done with their group book, they will be creating a project to present to the class. Collaboration, teamwork, determination, and accountability are learned throughout this unit. I can't wait for the opportunity to begin this journey with them.
