We are an energetic, vivacious, and growing group of diverse fourth graders. Our community is tirelessly working toward improving our ability to take care of others before ourselves, often reflecting on how we can be selfless rather than selfish. Some ways we do this is through community supplies, classroom meetings, practicing strategies to calm ourselves and others, and daily reflection on our choices. To summarize, we want to learn how to be empathetic citizens not only in our school, but in the world beyond!
We also have a wide range of learning needs, from far below grade level (2nd grade) to beyond 4th grade standards; our students need a lot of differentiated support, AND choices in order to feel empowered and have their learning/social needs met.
We want our students to understand that it is okay to be different and it is possible to rise beyond the limits other people place on them; we all have personal challenges and victories.
My Project
My students need art supplies to represent their unit of study in social studies. In fourth grade, students study immigration, as well as the history of New York City. Many of my students are new to the country and have family from all over the world. They find personal connections to this unit of study and identify with the struggles of early Americans, and want a way to represent this connection with history, to who they are today!
Through a canvas quilt, students will be able to represent who they are and what America is...displaying this pride they have in their culture, traditions, and interests and claiming their identity as beautiful and unique.
The goal of this unit is to understand that New York City, and the United States at large, is an immigrant nation...founded in a rich and diverse medley of beliefs, skin colors, and practices. Difference is something to be loved and encouraged, and is what MAKES America great!
