My students need a GoPro to be able to document a narrative of the most interesting aspect of their lives for our “Who am I and Where am I going?” Video Blog Project.
My students are unique because they are a blend of students who have lived in this area their whole lives and students who have moved here recently. We are in a transient, tourist-driven beach community. It is often hard to create lasting friendships when so many new people attend your school, or people move away after only a few years living here. Also, we have a huge socio-economic blend of families here. Some live in houses on the beach and some live fifteen minutes from the coast, but have never stepped foot on the beach.
Having such a diverse population is difficult, in terms of educational goals, for the group as a whole.
Many of my students do not have basic needs, such as healthy and sustainable food choices or access to washing machines at home. School becomes a place where they can receive basic services for life on top of their education, yet they are expected to perform at the same levels, academically, as their peers whose households are far better off financially. This proves to be quite the challenge.
My Project
Students will create a digital story of their lives now - highlighting something unique about them - and an expression of where they want to be in their adult lives. They will research career paths and either video someone they aspire to be like or some other creative aspect of their future goals. We will create a class website and they will blog and post their digital stories. The Go-Pro will allow them to create candid, life-like videos that creatively and accurately depict their lives. It will allow them to then edit and post their video stories to our classroom website!
