This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

In the past, I've had biology students write a short response about whether or not a plant in a bottle could survive by itself. I would like to go further with that this year.

I'd like to have my biology students actually set up a plant in a bottle, predicting what they think will happen, then monitoring their plant over a period of time, and then using the Argument-Driven Inquiry process of whiteboarding to share their findings and conclusions with each other.

I strongly believe in doing science in order to learn science, and these materials would help immensely. My students would want to make sure their tiny plant survives, and the process would help them to understand one of the most misunderstood high school biology concepts -- that plants do both photosynthesis and respiration. The whiteboards would replace our smaller whiteboards, where students need to use two boards that are harder to display during their whiteboard sessions.
