Do you remember the feeling of sitting in math class frustrated because you did not understand something? You would sit there confused and frantically erase your paper hoping an answer would come to you. But then, all of a sudden, that breakthrough moment would hit you and everything would click. These magical moments are the reason why my students do not give up in math class. Even when things get difficult, my students do not back down from a challenge because they know these moments are possible.
My students are passionate, committed, and driven to be successful.
When students enter my classroom, they must walk past an important quote that aids in the creation of our positive learning environment. It states, "Mistakes are proof that you are trying." Through productive struggle, my students learn that it is okay to make mistakes. They learn that even though it might take them a little bit longer than another classmate, they can still be successful. They know that effort is praised and correct answers are the product of hard work.
My Project
Whiteboard tables will give my students the opportunity to complete their work in math class in a fun and engaging way. When given a choice, my students always choose to use a whiteboard and marker instead of a paper and pencil. I have some whiteboard pouches and mini white boards, but they can easily end up lost or damaged. Having these whiteboard tables instead of desks will excite my students and make them feel more comfortable in class.
Using whiteboard tables encourages students to use their critical thinking skills and to creatively problem solve.
Working with just a pencil and paper, students give up much easier. If their answer is not correct, they have to go back and erase everything which could make their paper messy or even rip it. Working on the whiteboard table, students would have more space to try new ideas, use different colored markers for different parts of the problem, and to learn from their mistakes. My goal as their teacher is to do whatever I can to create the best learning environment possible for them to thrive. Through this project, I can make this goal a reality!
