My Students

I am a fourth year teacher, teaching 6th grade math and reading at a low income school. My students come from tough and diverse backgrounds and are very eager to learn. I want to help my students reach their full potential, and continue creating an environment where my students feel they are safe and are comfortable to learn.

My Project

In my math classroom we do whiteboard activities on a daily basis. My students love using them! It is an easy place for them to show and share their thinking. When students collaborate they are able to see that although there is one solution, there are many different ways to arrive at the solution.

The problem with whiteboards are that they are stained with frequent use making it hard for students to see their work, and dry erase markers do not last a very long time.

Earlier in the year, I gave each student their own personal whiteboard marker. If they lose their personal whiteboard marker, or their personal whiteboard marker runs out of ink, the students have to use pencil and paper. By donating to our project, I will be able to give each student another personal whiteboard marker as well as have loaner markers in the classroom for students who cannot afford to purchase their own.
