Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is a TK-8 school in the heart of East Oakland, opened after a design team of educators, parents, and community members spent a year re-envisioning the school’s mission.
Many of our students have significant social and emotional needs, stemming from indirect and direct trauma they have experienced.
Our student population is 82% Latino and 15% African American and a growing number of students from Southeast Asian and the Middle East. 98% of our students identify as low income (from the current SPF snapshot).
Our school started a Dual Language program last year. My current students will be the second generation of bilingual and bi-literate students in our community.
As they participate in our program, they will show cross-cultural competency, the ability to interact with a variety of people, across cultural and linguistic boundaries, and collaborate successfully.
They will graduate proficient in both languages, thus increasing their opportunities to enter college and embark on a successful career.
They will also engage in multiple leadership opportunities each year that will support them becoming social change agent as adults.
My Project
Whiteboards are essential in any kindergarten class. We use them for almost everything: forming letters in the beginning of the year, phonics activities, writing, math, workstations, multiple games...
In my case, they make my kindergartners enjoy their days much more (they love doing activities on them, and this keeps them engaged in what they are doing).
The problem is that they are using the same whiteboards that have been in the school for I don't know how many years. Many of them are scratched (which makes it impossible to clean them even if you try to clean them with wipes or cleaning spray). Other's lines are fading (you can't see the lines very clearly). Some are "peeling" (their lined layer is coming off). And just a few are in good condition.
It is not nice to see the disappointment in their faces when they get one of the oldest ones, and it makes it difficult for them to work on many of them.
It would be great to have new ones. I know that my kids would love them, and that they would be really excited to learn and work with them!
Also, I would love to be able to make color copies for some of their activities. Workstations are not the same if the pictures and the letters are just black, and the materials that I am creating for them look much more attractive in color... I truly believe that this will also make them be more engaged in their learning process and will keep them more focused!!
